US House Approves Measure Seeking to Limit War Powers in War o Iran

(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives has approved a war powers resolution aimed at restricting the deployment of American forces in hostilities involving Iran, according to reports.

The measure passed the lower chamber with a narrow vote of 215–208. It was introduced by Representative Gregory Meeks, the leading Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

According to reports, lawmakers supporting the resolution argue that Congress should reclaim its constitutional authority over decisions involving military engagement. The initiative has gained incremental support from some members of the Republican Party, reflecting growing cross-party debate over US involvement in the region.

Supporters of the measure described it as a response to what they view as an unauthorized and costly military escalation. They argued that ongoing operations have failed to achieve strategic objectives and have complicated diplomatic efforts related to Iran’s nuclear program.

The resolution’s backers also claimed that the conflict has affected US credibility in negotiations and increased regional instability, including tensions surrounding key maritime routes.

Lawmakers urging passage of the measure called on the Senate to advance the resolution, framing it as a necessary step to reassert congressional oversight and prevent further military escalation.

The vote highlights continuing political divisions in Washington over executive war authority and US military engagement in the Middle East.
