Trump announces plans to pull US troops out of Europe
Trump confirmed that reducing the number of US troops in Europe is an option, citing the lack of reimbursement for the US’s military presence there. He noted that such a move could be part of broader trade negotiations, even though it is not directly related to trade. As of early 2025, nearly 84,000 US troops are stationed in Europe, with significant concentrations in Germany and Poland.
NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, General Christopher Cavoli, advised against reducing troops, especially after the US increased its military presence in response to the Ukraine conflict in 2022. However, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that the decision will ultimately be made by President Trump, as the commander-in-chief.
Trump has long criticized European NATO members for not meeting defense spending targets and has pushed for greater burden-sharing in defense matters. Meanwhile, Russia has voiced concerns over NATO’s expansion and military activities near its borders.
