South Korea Relaunches Panmunjom Tours
(MENAFN) South Korea is set to reopen tours to Panmunjom, the truce village located within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), later this week, according to local reports on Thursday.
Citing a South Korean news agency, the Unification Ministry will relaunch the tours on Friday after halting them in late 2023 due to heightened military tensions with North Korea.
The inaugural tour group will consist of 17 individuals, including government personnel and executives from public sector companies. They are scheduled to visit Panmunjom, which lies just north of the military demarcation line separating the two Koreas and is historically significant as the site of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement.
Tours were initially suspended in July 2023 after former U.S. Army soldier Travis King crossed into North Korea during a visit to the Joint Security Area near the border, escalating military tensions.
King was held in North Korea for nearly two months before being released and repatriated to the United States.
Furthermore, around October 8, 2022, near Seoul, he unlawfully assaulted a superior noncommissioned officer by seizing him by the arm.
He was subsequently sentenced to time already served after pleading guilty to five charges: one count of desertion, one count of assaulting a non-commissioned officer, and three counts of disobeying a lawful order.
A military judge sentenced him to 12 months for desertion and one month each for the remaining four offenses.
