Trump unveils challenging ties with Zelensky
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has raised concerns about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s commitment to ending the ongoing conflict with Russia. Following a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump expressed hope that progress would be made but remained uncertain about Zelensky’s willingness to negotiate a resolution.
While Trump stated that he finds it easier to work with Moscow than Kiev, he acknowledged Zelensky as a strong leader who is difficult to negotiate with, though he believes Zelensky wants to end the war. He expressed optimism about the potential for peace, but stressed that it was unclear whether Ukraine was fully committed to ending hostilities.
Trump reiterated his stance that no meaningful progress would occur until he and Putin meet, urging Kiev to accept Moscow’s proposal for direct talks. He remains cautiously hopeful about achieving peace but emphasized that he would back away from mediation if certain conditions were not met, without revealing what those conditions might be.
Trump described his phone call with Putin as positive and noted progress, though he provided few details about his discussion with Zelensky. The US president has previously suggested that Ukraine is more difficult to work with, referencing a tense meeting in February where the Ukrainian delegation was told to return only when Zelensky was “ready for peace.”
Zelensky, in contrast, made it clear that while Ukraine wants to end the war, it would not accept any Russian “ultimatums” and demanded a full and unconditional ceasefire. Following his calls with Trump and Putin, Zelensky warned that Ukraine must be involved in any decisions regarding its future.
Putin, describing his conversation with Trump as candid and substantive, indicated that Russia was prepared to work with Kiev on a peace agreement aimed at resolving the root causes of the conflict.
