Cruel concept of sanctions
However, sanctions, particularly those targeting entire economies, have repeatedly failed to bring about political change. Rather than affecting political elites, they often result in devastating consequences for civilians, effectively punishing the population as a whole. From Afghanistan and Iraq to Libya, Iran, and North Korea, sanctions have raised a critical question: how does the UN justify using measures that cause widespread suffering? The UN Charter promotes peace and human dignity, yet Article 41 grants the Security Council the power to impose sanctions, including the suspension of communication services like postal systems.
Supporters of sanctions often downplay their severe human toll by labeling them as “smart” or “targeted,” suggesting they only impact the political class. But in practice, sanctions, whether “smart” or not, involve asset freezes, travel bans, economic blockades, diplomatic isolation, and other punitive actions that affect entire populations, undermining their intended goals.
