Putin, Trump Hold Phone Calls on Ukraine Conflict
(MENAFN) Russian Leader Vladimir Putin revealed on Monday that he had an extensive phone dialogue with United States Leader Donald Trump, focusing on the potential for a truce in Ukraine and ways to bring the conflict to an end.
The conversation, which lasted around two hours, took place as both leaders sought a path toward easing tensions in the region.
Addressing journalists in Sochi, Putin characterized the call with Trump as “frank and substantive,” underlining that the US president recognized Moscow’s efforts toward a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis.
Putin expressed appreciation to Trump for backing the revival of direct discussions in Istanbul involving both Moscow and Kyiv.
He pointed out that Trump clearly laid out his stance regarding a ceasefire between the conflicting parties.
“The US president expressed his position on the ceasefire and, for his part, also noted that Russia supports a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, we just need to determine the most effective ways to move towards peace,” Putin quoted Trump as saying.
According to Putin, a temporary halt in hostilities could be achieved once suitable arrangements are established.
He emphasized that both nations must seek balanced solutions that are acceptable to each side.
“We have agreed with the US president that Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum on a possible future peace treaty, defining a number of positions such as the principles of settlement, the timing of a possible peace agreement, including a possible ceasefire for a certain time if certain agreements are reached,” Putin concluded.
