US reveals revised Gaza pact suggestion
The latest proposal calls for a 45- to 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of ten hostages and Palestinian prisoners. While similar to previous ceasefire attempts, this version includes more specific language that could lead to a permanent peace agreement. Additionally, it features safeguards to prevent Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from unilaterally ending the truce, an issue that had previously derailed negotiations.
Netanyahu has reportedly expressed tentative approval of the plan, though he has set numerous conditions. Hamas, however, has yet to agree, demanding stronger assurances that a temporary ceasefire would eventually lead to a lasting peace.
While official talks are taking place in Qatar, Israeli sources claim that the actual negotiations are happening through other, less public channels. Previous mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the US have not led to a breakthrough. Netanyahu insists that the conflict will not end until Hamas is fully defeated, while Hamas rejects any terms involving disarmament.
The escalation began in October 2023 with a surprise Hamas attack on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties and the abduction of 250 people. As of Monday, Palestinian health officials report that the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 53,400.
