(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Monday, primarily discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the potential for a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev. The call was initially announced by Trump on Saturday, who emphasized that the main objective was to address the "bloodbath" between the two nations, alongside bilateral trade issues.
The Kremlin described the call as “important,” with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noting that the discussion would build upon the recent Turkish-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul. Peskov highlighted that Russia welcomes US mediation efforts, provided they help achieve peaceful resolution goals.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy involved in jumpstarting the peace process, expressed optimism about the call, hoping it would help break the deadlock in negotiations.
Later, Trump shared that he remains hopeful that “something will happen” after his conversation with Putin. However, he expressed uncertainty about Ukrainian President Zelensky's full commitment to ending the conflict. Trump remarked that while Zelensky is a strong leader, he is challenging to work with, though Trump hopes Zelensky is genuinely seeking a solution to the conflict.
