Trump states US should never have middled in Ukraine conflict
He expressed dismay at the scale of US support for Ukraine, describing it as “record-setting” and disproportionate compared to contributions from Europe. “We got ourselves entangled in something we shouldn’t have touched,” Trump said. “The amount of money and weapons we’ve sent is insane.”
While affirming that the US has not deployed troops, Trump argued that the financial commitment alone represents a massive and unjustified burden. He said his administration is working toward a diplomatic resolution, noting that both Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky appear open to peace.
Trump’s remarks followed a series of calls with European leaders and Zelensky. He warned that the war has become deeply entrenched, describing it as a “terrible situation” filled with “anger, hate, and death.”
Trump believes that a deal is possible and emphasized his experience as a negotiator: “If I thought Putin didn’t want peace, I wouldn’t bother talking.”
Asked if there’s a red line that would cause the US to walk away or increase involvement, Trump declined to specify, saying it could complicate talks.
Putin later described the call as “candid and productive,” and confirmed Russia’s willingness to draft a peace framework with Ukraine, reiterating Moscow’s focus on addressing the root causes of the conflict.
