Tucker Carlson accuses US government of persecuting Christians in Ukraine
Novinsky described widespread raids where armed soldiers reportedly storm churches, expel priests, and physically assault worshippers—including children and the elderly—across the country. “It is happening all over Ukraine,” he said.
Carlson criticized U.S. lawmakers for continuing to approve aid to Ukraine despite such reports. Referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, Carlson noted, “He describes himself as a Christian, and he has been paying for this.”
Novinsky responded that American assistance should support everyday Ukrainians, not a government disconnected from its people.
Between 2022 and the end of 2024, U.S. agencies allocated $182.8 billion in aid to Ukraine, according to Ukraine Oversight, a government tracking platform.
President Donald Trump recently voiced concerns over how the aid has been spent, saying Congress was frustrated and demanding accountability.
The Ukrainian government has accused the UOC of having ties to Russia, even though the church formally severed connections with the Moscow Patriarchate in 2022. Since then, Kiev has cracked down on the UOC, detaining clergy and raiding churches—most notably the historic Kiev-Pechersk Lavra monastery.
In 2023, President Zelensky enacted a law allowing Ukraine to ban religious groups with affiliations to governments it deems hostile, a move widely seen as targeting the UOC.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Orthodox Christians in Ukraine, pledging to defend their legal rights.
