North Korea Arrests Officials After Failed Warship Launch

(MENAFN) North Korean officials have taken into custody a fourth individual in relation to the recent mishap involving a naval destroyer that failed to launch successfully and is currently undergoing repairs, based on a report by state-controlled media on Monday.

The investigative team submitted its findings to the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea on Sunday.

Following this, the nation’s law enforcement agency summoned and apprehended Ri Hyong-son, who serves as the deputy director within the party's Munitions Industry Department.

A news agency noted that the arrest was made due to his involvement in the incident.

Investigators labeled Ri as "greatly responsible" for the mishap.

The news agency further reported that “at the scene of the destroyer launch accident, work for completely restoring the balance of the warship is being actively conducted under the technical guidance of an expert group.”

Restoration efforts are currently in progress at the site, led by a team of specialists.

The accident took place in the eastern coastal city of Chongjin, where the stern of the newly constructed 5,000-ton warship slid forward ahead of the bow during launch.

This malfunction resulted in physical damage to the ship and prevented it from departing the shipyard properly.

Supreme leader Kim Jong Un harshly criticized the event, labeling it a “criminal act” caused by “absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism.”

He vowed that those accountable would face consequences.
