N. Korea Arrests Fourth Official Over Naval Destroyer Mishap
The investigative team presented its findings to the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party on Sunday. Shortly after, law enforcement summoned and detained Ri Hyong-son, a vice department director within the party's Munitions Industry Department, in connection with the failed operation, according to the news agency.
Investigators identified Ri as "greatly responsible" for the mishap.
“At the scene of the destroyer launch accident, work for completely restoring the balance of the warship is being actively conducted under the technical guidance of an expert group,” the agency stated.
The incident occurred in the eastern port city of Chongjin, where the newly constructed 5,000-ton warship experienced a launch failure. The vessel’s stern moved prematurely ahead of the bow, resulting in structural damage that halted the destroyer’s departure from the shipway.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un denounced the failure as a “criminal act” caused by “absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism,” vowing to hold those accountable.
