South Korea’s Presidential Contest Narrows

(MENAFN) The presidential race in South Korea has become more competitive, with the distance between the leading candidates shrinking, according to the most recent survey released on Monday.

The Democratic Party (DP) nominee, Lee Jae-myung, continues to hold the position of front-runner, though his advantage has slightly diminished in the newest opinion polls, as reported by a news agency.

At the same time, his primary opponent, Kim Moon-soo of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), has increased his support as the election approaches in just eight days.

Lee Jun-seok, representing the New Reform Party (NRP), has achieved notable double-digit backing, revealed in a survey conducted by Realmeter.

The poll results indicated that Lee from the DP secured 46.6 percent support, followed by Kim from the PPP with 37.6 percent, and Lee from the NRP with 10.4 percent.

The survey’s margin of error stood at 3.1 percentage points with a 95 percent confidence interval.

Lee Jun-seok of the NRP, who previously held leadership within the PPP, has affirmed that he will maintain his candidacy until election day.

However, speculation continues about a potential alliance between the NRP and PPP candidates, a strategy that might shift momentum in favor of the ruling party.

This expedited presidential election was triggered by the Constitutional Court’s removal of Leader Yoon Suk Yeol in April, due to his failed attempt to impose martial law last December, and is set to take place on June 3.
