Indian FM states West facing ‘reality check’ over security
Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has said that Europe is undergoing a “reality check” after decades of enjoying a secure and prosperous geopolitical environment. In an interview with Dutch outlet NOS on Thursday, Jaishankar noted that, unlike India, European nations have not historically been forced to choose between security and economic growth.
He explained that India’s foreign policy and national priorities have long been shaped by its challenging neighborhood, particularly tensions with Pakistan and China. “I have difficult neighbors,” he said, citing persistent cross-border terrorism from Pakistan as a key example. This ongoing threat, he added, has instilled in India a pragmatic and often harsh view of global affairs—one he believes Europe has been shielded from since the end of World War II and especially after the Cold War.
Jaishankar emphasized that for India, security and development are intertwined. “Defending your country and territory is the foremost responsibility of any government,” he said, highlighting recent military action taken by India in Pakistan-controlled territory in response to an April terror attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
He also criticized what he perceives as European hypocrisy and strategic dependence. Jaishankar has previously called out the EU’s struggle to achieve “strategic autonomy,” pointing to its continued reliance on the United States for defense, Russia for energy, and China for trade—all dependencies now being tested by shifting global dynamics.
