Senior Russian diplomat states whatever Ukraine truce is must back forever peace

(MENAFN)
Any ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine must pave the way for lasting peace rather than serving as a tactical pause for Ukraine to strengthen its military, Russian ambassador-at-large Rodion Miroshnik has said. His remarks came ahead of direct talks between the two countries, scheduled to take place in Istanbul on Friday.

Miroshnik voiced concern over Ukraine’s push for an unconditional 30-day truce, suggesting it reflects a troubling gap between the negotiating positions. He warned that Kiev could use the break to regroup, build defenses, and stockpile weapons, only to escalate the conflict again afterward.

“A ceasefire that isn’t part of a broader, long-term peace framework would be unacceptable for Russia,” Miroshnik emphasized.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky initially demanded a truce before agreeing to talks but appeared to soften his position after pressure from US officials, who are pushing for negotiations as the next step in resolving the conflict.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently proposed resuming talks in Türkiye, where negotiations had previously stalled in 2022. Zelensky responded by saying he would travel to Istanbul personally and expected Putin to attend. However, after Russia announced its delegation would not be high-level, Zelensky criticized them as “theater props” and appointed Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to lead Ukraine’s team.

Miroshnik accused Kiev of treating the negotiations as a “political show” rather than serious diplomacy and cast doubt on Zelensky’s legitimacy, noting that his presidential term has expired. He warned that any agreements made under these conditions could be challenged later and called for the inclusion of legal transition mechanisms in the talks.

Under Ukraine’s constitution, the speaker of parliament is supposed to take over if no presidential election is held on time, but Zelensky has continued to govern beyond his official term.
