Putin assigns top general in Security Council

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin has named General Oleg Salyukov as the new deputy secretary of the National Security Council, according to a presidential decree issued on Thursday. As part of the appointment, Salyukov has stepped down from his previous position as commander-in-chief of the Russian Ground Forces.

Salyukov had led the Ground Forces—Russia’s largest military branch—since 2014. Before that, he served as deputy chief of the General Staff and was the commander of the Far Eastern Military District.

In 2023, he took on the role of deputy commander in Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, reporting to General Valery Gerasimov, head of the General Staff. He also played a key role in overseeing Russian troops deployed to Belarus following the formation of a joint military grouping in October 2022. For more than a decade, Salyukov presided over the Victory Day parades held annually in Moscow’s Red Square.

No official explanation has been provided by the Kremlin for the leadership change. In his new role, Salyukov will work under Sergey Shoigu, Russia’s former defense minister and the current head of the Security Council.

A successor to lead the Russian Ground Forces has not yet been named.
