Fatima Deryan Recalls Journey to Conquer Everest
At just 14 years old, during a family trip to Nepal, she gazed out over the Himalayas and caught her first glimpse of Mount Everest.
The imposing presence of the world’s tallest peak rising above the surrounding mountains ignited a deep passion within her.
“I came off that plane and told my family, ‘One day I’m going to come back and climb that mountain’," Deryan shared in an interview with a news agency.
Despite her determination, her family didn’t take her ambition seriously at the time.
Over a decade later, she achieved what she had dreamed of, becoming the first Lebanese woman to reach the summit of Everest.
“Ten years later, I met this person who actually climbed Mount Everest, and he was talking about his story. So, when I listened to that story, I went straight up to him and I said, How can I do it? I know it’s my dream,” she recounted.
Born in Kuwait and raised across Lebanon and Dubai, Deryan’s route to the top of Everest and into the world of mountaineering was far from typical.
What began as a childhood aspiration evolved into a personal mission: to scale the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on every continent. To date, she has successfully climbed more than 25 mountains at high altitudes.
“So, I just went on to climb my first mountain, and it turned out to be the highest mountain in Europe. It was called Mount Elbrus, and I just fell in love with mountaineering,” she explained.
