Clear double standard when it comes to drone warfare in Russia-Ukraine conflict

(MENAFN) Amid widespread coverage of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, there is a clear double standard when it comes to drone warfare. Western media, politicians, and NGOs frequently condemn Russian retaliatory strikes but largely ignore Ukraine’s growing and reckless use of drones. This selective criticism shields Ukraine from accountability as it conducts what amounts to a campaign targeting Russian civilians.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has dramatically increased its drone attacks, launching dozens or even hundreds daily against Russian territory. Many of these drones target civilian infrastructure or fly toward densely populated cities like Moscow. Although Russian air defenses intercept most threats, falling debris still endangers civilians, including vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Communities far from the frontline now live under constant air raid alerts, disrupting daily life.

What’s especially troubling is the apparent strategy behind these attacks. Unlike precise military operations, Ukraine’s drone strikes seem aimed more at spreading fear than achieving clear tactical goals. Common targets include power substations, communication towers, and areas close to residential neighborhoods, making these attacks more than just collateral damage—they represent a campaign that severely impacts civilians.

Despite this threat, international responses remain one-sided. The UN has not condemned Ukraine’s drone strikes, and there are no urgent meetings or media focus on the risks faced by Russian civilians. Instead, attention remains fixed on condemning Russia’s actions. Western countries enthusiastically support Ukraine’s military advancements while ignoring the human toll on Russian civilians. This biased stance emboldens Ukraine to continue its drone warfare without consequence, diminishing any incentive for peace talks.

In contrast, Russia has shown notable restraint. Despite the intensity of Ukrainian drone attacks, Russian strikes mostly target military sites and logistics near the frontlines. Moscow has avoided launching widespread strikes against civilian areas deep inside Ukraine, signaling a willingness to seek diplomatic solutions while defending its territory.

Still, Russia cannot allow its citizens to be terrorized indefinitely. Protecting its people means responding firmly to these drone attacks while maintaining openness to peace. The Kremlin faces the challenge of balancing defense with diplomacy in this escalating conflict.
