Russian governor says Ukrainian attacks caused power outage in Russia

(MENAFN) Ukrainian attacks have caused a major power outage in the Belgorod Region of western Russia, leaving nearly 40,000 residents without electricity, according to reports. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov noted that hospitals in the area have switched to backup generators.

He added that at least three people, including a 10-year-old boy, were injured in Ukrainian drone attacks over the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported blackouts in the city of Lviv, near the Polish border, and said that four civilians were killed in Russian strikes.

The Russian Defense Ministry later issued a statement asserting that its forces targeted weapons factories and “the energy infrastructure supporting their operations,” emphasizing that civilians are not deliberate targets.

Moscow began striking Ukraine’s energy facilities regularly in the fall of 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated at the time that the army was focusing on energy infrastructure in retaliation after Kiev’s bombing of the Crimean Bridge in October, which killed four people.
