Thousands of people in Russia lose power due to Ukrainian strikes

(MENAFN) Power outages have struck the Belgorod Region in western Russia following Ukrainian attacks, leaving nearly 40,000 residents without electricity, according to the region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov. Hospitals in the area have been forced to rely on backup generators amid the blackout, the governor reported on social media platform Telegram.

Gladkov also confirmed that Ukrainian drone strikes over the past 24 hours resulted in injuries to at least three individuals, including a 10-year-old boy. Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities announced blackouts in the western city of Lviv, located near the Polish border, and reported that Russian strikes killed four civilians there on Sunday.

The Russian Defense Ministry responded with a statement asserting that their forces targeted weapons manufacturing facilities and the associated energy infrastructure, emphasizing that civilian targets are not deliberately attacked.

Since the fall of 2022, Moscow has increased attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This campaign was reportedly intensified after Ukraine’s bombing of the Crimean Bridge in October 2022, an attack that resulted in four fatalities, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
