CIA director meets with EU officials to rebuild strained ties
(MENAFN) CIA Director John Ratcliffe met with European Union officials last week in an effort to mend strained relations between US intelligence agencies and their European counterparts, according to reports.
During the meetings, Ratcliffe held discussions with the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, and senior representatives from the EU Intelligence and Situation Center (INTCEN) as well as the EU Military Staff Intelligence Directorate (EUMS). He aimed to reaffirm Washington’s commitment to intelligence sharing and emphasize that the CIA “wants to keep lines open,” sources indicated.
CIA spokeswoman Liz Lyons told reporters that Ratcliffe focused on “evolving threats” from Russia and China, adding, “Any reporting that suggests concerns were raised that the US is not a reliable partner are false and disconnected from reality.”
Some analysts noted that trust among European allies began to waver after President Donald Trump briefly suspended intelligence sharing with Ukraine last March and appointed perceived loyalists to key intelligence positions. Certain Democrats have labeled Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s nominee to oversee the intelligence agencies, a “Russia asset,” a claim she has denied.
The meetings come amid growing tensions involving US tech companies in Europe. Last month, Palantir, a US-linked software firm, criticized Britain’s proposal to introduce digital IDs for all citizens, with UK chief Louis Mosley calling the plan “very controversial.” Similarly, encrypted messenger Signal has threatened to exit the EU market if the bloc implements its Chat Control initiative. Ratcliffe defended the use of Signal for official communications, noting that most CIA officers rely on the platform.
