Takaichi, Trump Discuss Indo-Pacific Challenges

(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump held a conversation on Tuesday regarding “various challenges facing the Indo-Pacific region,” as reported in a statement by Japan’s Foreign Ministry.

“The two leaders also exchanged views on strengthening the Japan-U.S. Alliance ... President Trump made an explanation on the latest situation of U.S.-China relations including the recent U.S.-China summit meeting,” the statement noted, adding that the telephone discussion lasted 25 minutes.

“The two leaders affirmed that the two countries will continue working closely under the current international situation,” the Japanese Foreign Ministry statement continued.

This dialogue occurred a day after Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid rising tensions between Beijing and Tokyo concerning Taiwan.

On Monday, Trump described his conversation with Xi as “very good” and mentioned that he had accepted an invitation to visit Beijing in April.

According to Chinese state media, Xi informed Trump that the return of Taiwan to China constituted an essential component of the post-war international order.

Earlier, on Nov. 7, Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated to lawmakers that any Chinese military action against Taiwan could legally be seen as a “survival-threatening situation,” which might enable Japan to “exercise the right of collective self-defense.”
