Kyiv, Washington align on Ukraine peace talks in Geneva
In a statement on Facebook, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Defense and Security Council, described the Sunday meetings in Geneva as “productive and constructive,” and praised US President Donald Trump’s efforts to help resolve the ongoing conflict.
“Our delegations reached a common understanding on the core terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva,” Umerov said, adding that Kyiv now looks forward to backing from its European partners for the next steps.
He also noted that officials are planning a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the United States “at the earliest suitable date in November” to finalize the agreement with Trump.
Representatives from the US, Ukraine, and European allies convened in Geneva to review the proposal aimed at ending the more than three-and-a-half-year conflict. Trump has indicated that the plan drafted by the US is not intended to be his “final offer,” amid concerns from Kyiv and its allies.
Zelenskyy commented Monday that after negotiations, the plan—initially consisting of 28 points—now contains “fewer points” but retains “many of the right elements.”
On the same day, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that the US is expected to contact Moscow “soon” to discuss the proposal, though no firm arrangements have yet been made. He confirmed that Russia has seen a version of the plan that reflects understandings reached during a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska earlier this year.
