UK Exposes Covert Russian Submarine Plot in the Atlantic

(MENAFN) Britain has unmasked a covert Russian naval operation in the Atlantic north of the UK, with Defense Secretary John Healey revealing Thursday that three Russian submarines had been tracked, shadowed, and ultimately exposed during a month-long surveillance mission.

Speaking directly from Downing Street, Healey confirmed that British forces had detected a significant uptick in Russian naval movements in the region, deploying both a warship and aircraft in response. Russian vessels were placed under round-the-clock surveillance throughout the operation, he said, stripping away any pretense of secrecy Moscow may have intended.

"Our armed forces left them in no doubt that they were being monitored, that their movements were not covert, as (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin planned, and that their attempted secret operation had been exposed," Healey said.

While the scale of the operation raised eyebrows across the defense community, Healey moved to reassure the public, emphasizing there was "no evidence" of any damage to UK infrastructure in the Atlantic.

The Defense Secretary then delivered a pointed warning directly to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin over Russia's apparent interest in undersea infrastructure: "We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences."

Healey also pushed back firmly against any suggestion that Britain's focus on the Middle East had left its northern flank exposed, offering a blunt assessment of Putin's alleged strategic calculus.

"I'm pretty clear that Putin would want us to be distracted by the Middle East, and what I'm setting out today demonstrates that we are not just exposing his covert operation, but we are saying to him that we recognize Russia as the primary threat to the UK and to NATO, and that we will not take our eyes off Putin, whilst at the same time, we act to protect our British interests and our British allies in the Middle East," he added.

The revelation signals a hardening posture from London, one that makes clear Britain intends to simultaneously confront Russian aggression in the Atlantic while maintaining its commitments to regional security in the Middle East.
