Provided by AGPA UN spokesperson said that more countries are now supporting the idea of establishing a structured mechanism to ensure the safe and uninterrupted flow of essential goods, particularly food supplies, through the strategic waterway. The initiative is intended to reduce the risk of worsening food insecurity tied to ongoing regional disruptions.
The UN also provided an update on efforts led by Jorge Moreira da Silva, who heads the organization’s task force working on the issue. The UN also reiterated its broader position on maritime access in the region, emphasizing that the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened and that freedom of navigation must be restored. The organization stressed that unrestricted maritime passage is a long-established international norm that should be upheld.
Officials further highlighted that maintaining open sea lanes is essential for global trade stability, particularly for essential commodities moving through the area.
