Schumer Pushes New Senate Vote to End US Involvement in Iran Conflict

(MENAFN) US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Monday that Senate Democrats will push for another vote aimed at ending US military involvement in the ongoing conflict with Iran, accusing President Donald Trump of involving the United States in an unauthorized war.

Speaking on the Senate floor, Schumer argued that the administration has gone beyond the limits set under the War Powers Act, which requires congressional approval for extended military engagement.

He claimed that the Trump administration exceeded the 60-day threshold without securing authorization from Congress, saying the legal requirements for continuing hostilities had not been met.

“Let me repeat: Donald Trump dragged America into a war, an illegal, costly war without any goals, without any endgame,” Schumer said.

He also rejected the administration’s interpretation that the conflict had effectively ended, criticizing officials for suggesting that the timeline under the War Powers Act no longer applied.

“It’s been over a week since we hit the 60-day threshold under the War Powers Act, which means the hostilities must cease unless Trump gets authorization from Congress. Donald Trump and (Defense Secretary) Pete Hegseth tried to skirt the deadline when they told us the timer had stopped because the fighting was over," he continued.

Schumer dismissed claims that the situation had been resolved, arguing that ongoing tensions and failed negotiations show the conflict is still active.

"The war's over? Bunk, poppycock craziness to even say it," he said.

He also pointed to the breakdown of recent diplomatic efforts with Iran as evidence that the situation remains unresolved and continues to require congressional oversight and action.
