UK Starmer Vows to 'Get on with Governing'

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer moved Tuesday to shore up his embattled government, pledging to press forward despite mounting demands from within his own party that he step down following Labour's bruising election losses.

Addressing his Cabinet, Starmer struck a defiant tone, insisting his administration would not be paralyzed by the political turbulence engulfing Westminster in recent days.

In a readout issued by No. 10, he told ministers: "As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised.

"The past 48 hours have been destabilizing for the government, and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families. The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered.

"The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet."

The intervention came as pressure on the prime minister reached a critical threshold. Communities Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh became the first serving government minister to submit her resignation, joining a bloc of more than 70 Labour MPs who have publicly called on Starmer either to vacate his position immediately or commit to a clear departure timeline.

The crisis escalated further late Monday night when No. 10 moved swiftly to plug gaps in the government's junior ranks, replacing six ministerial aides who had stepped down earlier that evening — a move widely interpreted as a damage-control effort to prevent further institutional erosion as the prime minister's position grew increasingly precarious.
