(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer moved Tuesday to shore up his embattled government, pledging to press forward despite mounting demands from within his own party that he step down following Labour's bruising election losses.

Communities Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh became the first serving government minister to submit her resignation, joining a bloc of more than 70 Labour MPs who have publicly called on Starmer either to vacate his position immediately or commit to a clear departure timeline.

The crisis escalated further late Monday night when No. 10 moved swiftly to plug gaps in the government's junior ranks, replacing six ministerial aides who had stepped down earlier that evening — a move widely interpreted as a damage-control effort to prevent further institutional erosion as the prime minister's position grew increasingly precarious.
