Provided by AGPDespite the growing criticism, Starmer told supporters earlier in the day that he is “not walking away,” adding that he will not “plunge our country into chaos.”
However, internal pressure within the party has intensified, with additional MPs publicly breaking ranks. Among them were Alex Ballinger, the MP for Halesowen, and Tonia Antoniazzi, MP for Gower and chair of the Northern Ireland Select Committee.
Antoniazzi wrote on US social media platform X: “There will be those that disagree with me but I think it is genuinely time for him to step aside as PM in an orderly manner.”
Ballinger said that while he personally respects Starmer, he believes public confidence has eroded significantly.
“I support a transition to a new leader, one who will be bolder, and one who can better articulate how Labour is changing our country for the better,” he said on X.
Earlier, Labour backbencher Bell Ribeiro-Addy also joined calls for resignation, stating: “It is clear the PM does not have a credible plan. He must now set out a timetable for departure.”
The developments highlight deepening divisions within Labour as the party faces political fallout after the election results.
