Norway Raises Cyber Risk Level as Attacks Surge

(MENAFN) Norway’s National Security Authority (NSM) has raised the country’s cyber risk assessment to “high,” the second-highest category on its scale, pointing to worsening security conditions and developments in recent months.

Announcing the change at a news conference on Tuesday, NSM Director Arne Christian Haugstoyl called on Norwegian businesses to reinforce their digital defenses and promptly fix known software vulnerabilities.

The authority warned that advances in artificial intelligence are allowing cyber threat actors to discover and exploit security weaknesses far more quickly.

“Businesses therefore have hours, not days or weeks, to close known vulnerabilities,” Haugstoyl said.

In an accompanying statement, NSM urged companies to introduce protective measures immediately and released 21 recommended actions for businesses throughout Norway.

Justice and Emergency Preparedness Minister Astri Aas-Hansen also called on companies to review their information technology security and resolve vulnerabilities without delay, according to reports.

Haugstoyl said successful cyber operations against Norwegian businesses had tripled over the past year, with several incidents causing significant damage.

One disclosed case involved the municipality of Lorenskog, where attackers stole a substantial volume of data during a security breach.

The stolen information was later offered for sale on the dark web.

The increased risk classification reflects growing concern over cybercriminals’ ability to exploit digital weaknesses, particularly as artificial intelligence enhances the speed and efficiency of their operations.
